I wish to express my gratitude to all those who took pains to make this  meeting happen. Furthermore, I am most grateful to the district and town authorities of Wadowice as well as to local administrations for supporting efforts of people living here... Now Wadowice is represented by the mayor of the town while in my day it was the mayor, Teofil Kluck, who governed the town.

John Paul II

The origins of the organised schooling in Wadowice date back to the 16th century. In the former school system a teacher had the right to claim some amount of money from the town inhabitants and from craftsmen, which formed his salary. One of those who made a contribution to schooling and a hospital was, a dweller of Wadowice, the dean of the faculty of theology at the Jagiellonian University - Marcin Kępka Wadowita, who bequeathed some amount of money to the aforesaid purposes.

During the partitions, soon after the seat of the district had been moved to Wadowice, the District School was opened in 1821. The year 1866 saw the introduction of the Polish language to lessons in that school.

The building erected for the municipal council in 1846 was used by the town and district authorities as well as later by the comprehensive school. Since 1975 it has been the seat of the town authorities.

In the period between the two world wars the comprehensive school as well as the municipal council were located in the building in question. It is also worth mentioning that Karol Wojtyła attended this school in the years 1926-30. This most distinguished graduate of the school had top marks on his school-leaving certificate. It was, too, in that period when approximately 16% of Jews attended the school. They had their own teacher of religion. During the World War II Wadowice had a ghetto from which Jews were taken to concentration camps.

„I know that the Jews from Wadowice went through hard times. Many of them died in ghettos and later on in German concentration camps.”

John Paul II
