Tt is with great emotion that I look at this town of my childhood years, which was witness to my first steps, my first words. The town of my childhook, my family home, the church where I was baptized.

John Paul II

With these words the Holy Father John Paul II welcomed the pilgrims gathered in Wadowice on 16th June 1999. With these words he greeted the corners he used to frequent in his homeland, the mother land where he was born. Today tourists and pilgrims come to Wadowice to walk the same streets and breath the same Galician air as Karol Wojtyla.

The name Oppodium WADOWICZE (Wadowice town) appears for the first time in a parchment document dating from 1327, in which the Lord of these lands, Prince Jan I Scholastyk of Oswiecim, gives his princedom to the Czech king, Jan Luxemburg.

After more than 100 years of belonging to Czech kings, Wadowice returns to its motherland in 1456. The final incorporation of the princedom into the crown is carried out by the Parliament of the Republic in 1564. The crest even today includes a royal crown, and the town carries the proud title of ROYAL FREE TOWN of WADOWICE. The Austrian authorities invested heavily in the construction of a road linking thepomnik1.jpg (17.33 Kb) country’s capital city, Vienna, with Lvov, the province’s capital city; it was known as the „Emperor’s Road”.

In 1819 the capital of the area was moved to Wadowice. Gradually throughout the 19th century, the present town square was built, and the 56th Infantry Regiment of the Austrian Empire was stationed there. In 1918 it became the 12th Infantry Regiment in which Karol Wojtyla, the Pope’s father, served.
